Book Overview

It is safe to say world history before the twentieth century is not well known. There seems to be little appreciation of how we have progressed from the world of illiteracy to the magical world of DNA, democracy, and drive-through wedding chapels. The historical record is one of humans constantly seeking to improve their freedoms, their standard of living, and true justice.

The leaders of this intellectual and cultural revolution were explorers, scientists, writers, entrepreneurs, and social liberals. For the past 400 years, humanity has been on a slow but relentless migration from the old conservative world of kings and slaves to a world of liberties and popular rule. This book sheds light on how we got here. Unbiased sources are referenced throughout the book.

When deciding whom we will vote for, we tend to focus on the individual candidates. We judge their character, their sincerity, their passion, and their positions against our personal hot topics. We often dismiss the party affiliations as only minor concerns. But the most significant decisions are made by the entire party and not by the individual. Things like lifetime judicial appointments, gun laws, and health care are determined by majority votes in Congress. In today’s political environment, important votes are usually split along party lines. So the party affiliations of candidates are crucial. This book explores the history and differences between political parties.

As used here, American refers to “people of the United States” unless otherwise specified. This is technically inaccurate since American refers to “anyone living in either of the two American continents.” A Canadian is from Canada. A Mexican is from Mexico. We have no word to describe people of the United States, so we default back to using American for lack of a better word.

The author here is a card-carrying independent who voted for Jack Kennedy, Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, and Bill Clinton.
